What actually goes wrong with garage door openers

The motor runs but the door does not move

This is the most common opener fault and it has three usual causes. The nylon drive gear inside the head unit has stripped its teeth, so the motor spins against nothing. The trolley has been left disengaged after someone used the manual release. Or the chain or belt has jumped its sprocket.

All three are inexpensive repairs and all three are usually finished in one visit. A stripped gear is also a symptom worth reading: gears strip because the motor has been fighting a heavy or badly balanced door, so the balance gets checked before the new gear goes in.

The motor hums but will not start

A hum with no movement is the signature of a failed start capacitor. The capacitor gives the motor the kick it needs to begin turning; without it the winding energises, sits there, and gets hot.

It is a cheap part and a quick replacement, but it should not be left. A motor that is repeatedly energised without turning will cook its windings, and at that point the whole unit is finished rather than a single component.

The door stops short, or reverses for no reason

Openers store how far the door should travel and how much force it should need along the way. When the door stops short of fully open or closed, those stored travel limits have drifted or been corrupted — often by a hard power cut, which is a routine event in this part of Johannesburg.
